THE LIFE OF THE PARISH |
|
Tom doing the impossible - judging the Easter Bonnets |
The worshipping life of the parish centers around the Eucharist. There is a daily celebration (except on Wednesdays, the Vicar’s ‘day-off’) and the main Service on Sundays is the 9.30am Sung Eucharist. This Service, which has some ceremonial including incense, and an Offertory procession, attracts a regular congregation of about 150 people. During part of it the younger school children are encouraged to attend classes in which volunteers from the worshipping community instruct them. A choir of some eight adults and fifteen children of both sexes contribute by both leading the singing of hymns and with a weekly anthem. The form of worship is that of the modern language Order One of Common Worship, the new Church of England alternative services book. An early celebration at 8 am, using the traditional language Order Two, attracts a congregation of up to 40. Matins is sung on the first and third Sundays of month at 11am using the Book of Common Prayer with an average congregation of some 20 souls. |
There are two Bible Study groups in the parish as well as an Ecumenical Prayer Group. The Outreach Group meets to support the work of the church both at home and abroad. This has included a local AIDS support group in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. A recent development is the link, together with Bosham School, with a parish and School in Sierra Leone, St Philip’s, Freetown. There is also an active Youth Outreach Group who support a number of causes including a Hospice for children. They meet regularly and arrange events to support their charities.
The churches of the village all meet from time to time under the umbrella of ‘Meeting Point’, a committee of members from each of the churches encouraging ecumenical contact. Under its auspices Lent Courses are held every Spring, as too Friday lent Lunches during that season. There have also been four ALPHA courses held in the parish and from time to time a course is provided. |
